I then deal with the status of five specific challenges during which science and expertise (S&T) have particularly essential roles to play: meeting the fundamental wants of the poor; managing the competition for the land, water, and terrestrial biota of the planet; maintaining the integrity of the oceans; mastering the power-economic system-setting dilemma; and transferring towards a nuclear weapon-free world.
